The Crime Stoppers program is a vital component of the fight against crime. No matter how well organized, equipped or energetic a law enforcement agency may be, it cannot function effectively without the cooperation and involvement of the community. Crime Stoppers has proven itself to be one of the foremost community involvement programs in the world. It has solved over half million felony cases and recovered over three billion dollars in prooperty and narcotics around the globe.

There are currently several individual programs in the state of North Carolina which are affiliated worldwide through Crime Stoppers International, Inc., representing thousands of other individual programs. The Crime Stoppers concept was first developed in 1976 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Crime Stoppers concept however, has a critical difference from other programs that involve the community. Crime Stoppers programs through its law enforcement coordinators are an investigative body working with citizens as one crime fighting unit.

There are people who have information which could solve major crimes, but either because of fear or apathy do not come forward with what they know. Crime Stoppers is an alternative to calling 911, working on the assumption that in some cases people who could not otherwise become involved would do so if they felt safe and/or were motivated. The Crime Stoppers program offers this double opportunity:

Guarantees caller anonymity.

Offers a cash reward.

This tripartite organization is made up of The Community in which private citizens are represented through a local civilian board of directors which governs the non-profit and self sustaining organization and raises the funds necessary for its operation. Providing Financial support and the information to solve those serious crimes is major way all the community can all be involved. The News Media which is an instrumental ingredient to the formula publicizes a special case each week through radio, television and in the newspaper in order to generate information that will raise community awareness and generate tips that lead to the solving of the crime. The Law Enforcement and key part of the equation are the police detectives that staff the Crime Stoppers office, and take the anonymous tips, work with the media, investigate and/or follow up each serious crime and network with the entire criminal justice system to insure a speedy apprehension.
